The Campaign for the Victims of Racist Police Violence (KOP) declares its solidarity with the refugees in the former Gerhart-Hauptmann school and their demand for a right to stay after § 23 for the protesting refugees. The occupied school has been a shelter for protesting refugees for one and a half years. Since six days refugees are resisting the planned eviction of the school by staying within the school and on its roof.

KOP criticizes the police strategy of isolation. Preventing journalists from coming into the school equals a suspension of the freedom of the press. According to the refugees the dismantling of this right is part of a broader strategy: „Their intention is to criminalize us and to show the public only their own perspective. This is why they prevent us from talking to the press. They need to make us look like terrorists.“ KOP endorses this explanation and demands the restoration of the freedom of the press by giving journalists access to the school.

Racist police violence takes the form of a daily harassment that targets migrants, refugees and people of color. Also, it can be used as a means to terrorize and criminalize protesting refugees as a political collective. In their „Message from the Roof“ the refugees let us know about the racist police violence they experienced:

„We are now on the roof since six days. The last days have been very hard and exhausting to us, not only because of being on the roof, but more because we are facing harassment by the police again and again. During the night of 27/28 June police was shaking the door and made different statements so we could not get a rest. Deprivation of sleep is only one of the methods through which they were trying to break our resistance. As Ramadan has begun, many of us must fast. The lack of sleep due to the police and demands of fasting make the situation more precarious. During the day the police insulted as in racist ways. They were watching us from another roof and waving, not only with handcuffs, but also with bananas.“

The goal of this police strategy of criminalization and harassment is to break the refugees‘ resistance and make their demand of a right to stay according to § 23 look as impossible. Until now the political decision to apply § 23 to the refugees is being rejected by the responsible politicians. Therefore, we call for an intensification of the support of the people in the school: creation of public pressure, demonstrations, donations, declarations of solidarity and the documentation of racist police violence are (some of the) necessary means to reach the goal of papers for all.

Solidarity and immediate right to stay according to § 23 for the refugees in Ohlauer Street!

Rassistische Polizeigewalt trifft als tägliche Schikane einzelne Migrant_innen, Refugees und People of Color.
