#BlackLivesMatterBerlin – Germany has a racism problem!

Racism is part of everyday life for Black people and is not only reflected in verbal insults and physical violence. This also applies to Germany.
Racial discrimination is experienced by people in this country on a personal and institutional level. This ranges from racial profiling, biased legislation and school education, racist street naming, to dealing with refugees and the limited access to labor and housing markets. But the media is also complicit in perpetuating this discrimination.
In addition to all these issues, there are current events from all over the world that remind us again and again that a continuous intervention by the population is needed.

In Germany, these include the recent racist murder of William Tonou-Mbobda and the residual case of Rooble Warsame. Furthermore, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt voted against the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry committee into  the case of Oury Jalloh at the beginning of the year.

At the end of 2013, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the international decade for people of African descent, the motto „People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice and Development.“ Germany committed itself among others, to promote the concerns of people of African descent and combat racism by 2024. But where are the institutional and legislative consequences, other than  isolated and voluntary interventions? Germany has to fulfill its responsibility.

We are not willing to accept nor hush up racism – and the violation of our human dignity and rights.

For this reason, for the fourth time, the Black Lives Matter protest will take place in Berlin on Friday, 5 July 2019, starting at 5:00 pm. Networking and the call to action are also in the foreground this year: We want to link existing spaces, resources and contacts in order to organize ourselves together in resistance, in order to become and stay active. The protest march is part of a long-term local and transnational cooperation.

The protest starts at the underground station M*straße. Its racist naming related to the Brandenburg-Prussian slave trade history is still symbolic of Germany’s lack of will to deal with racism. The speakers of the demo will shed light on the manifold effects of racism in the past, but also on the existing unequal power relations that repeatedly reproduce racism. It is our concern to always acknowledge that different forms of discrimination, such as racism and sexism, are interwoven and produce specific exclusions.

The march continues from M*straße via Friedrichstraße, Rudi-Dutschke-Straße, Oranienstraße, Kottbusser Tor, Skalitzer- and Wiener Straße to Spreewaldplatz. From about 8:00 pm there will be live music, poetry and more speeches.

Founded in 2012 after the violent death of Trayvon Martin in the US, the movement has international significance: despite specific problems in different countries, the Black Lives Matter principle makes racist structures visible worldwide. Black life is not only endangered in the US.

The Black Lives Matter protest stands for a lasting change in our society and against the silencing of racism. Silence is violence too.
