Even though it is increasingly acknowledged, that racism can be found at many levels of society, the judiciary is usually thought to be a “neutral” and “objective” sphere. Thus, the aim of the series of lectures “racism in the courtroom” is to open up a space to criticise racism as an everyday phenomenon in the criminal justice system.

The event is organised by a group that monitors racism in the judiciary (Prozessbeobachtungs-gruppe Rassismus und Justiz), mainly in Berlin. We cooperate with ReachOut (counselling centre for victims of racist, right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic violence) and KOP (campaign for victims of racist police violence) and have regularly been observing trials for about two years.

After lawyers reported about the courtroom atmosphere for people of colour, a comparative perspective on how the issue is dealt with in the UK, and most recently an insight into the psychological dimension of racism within the courtroom, we will use the fourth session to give an account of our work. We would like to present and discuss some transcripts of trials with regard to the following questions: How does racism manifest itself in the courtroom? What recurring patterns can be identified? What difficulties come along with the monitoring of trials? What strategies can we develop for the future?

Die Prozessbeobachtungsgruppe Rassismus und Justiz besteht seit Anfang des Jahres 2014 und beobachtet und dokumentiert in Kooperation mit ReachOut und KOP regelmäßig Prozesse, mit dem Fokus auf Berlin. Mit der Veranstaltungsreihe „Rassismus im Gerichtssaal“ soll die in der Gesellschaft dominierende Vorstellung von Neutralität und Objektivität der Justiz hinterfragt und ein Raum gegeben werden, um den alltäglichen Rassismus in der Justiz zu diskutieren.

Nach Berichten von Anwält_innen, dem Blick auf den Umgang mit dem Thema in Großbritannien, und zuletzt psychologischen Perspektiven auf Rassismus im Gerichtssaal wird in der vierten Veranstaltung die Gruppe von ihrer Arbeit erzählen. Es werden einige der dabei entstandenen Protokolle vorgestellt und diskutiert. Die Leitfragen sind: wie manifestiert sich Rassismus im Gerichtssaal? Welche wiederkehrenden Muster lassen sich erkennen? Welche Schwierigkeiten und Probleme bringt Prozessbeobachtung mit sich? Und welche Strategien können wir entwickeln?
